Learn side control escapes with frames, hip movement, and knee recovery for rebuilding guard under pressure.

Back to Side Control

Overview

Escaping side control is a fundamental survival skill in BJJ. This escape uses proper framing and hip movement to create space and recover guard.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Create Frames

Establish strong frames - near arm frames on their neck/jaw, far arm frames on their hip. Never let them flatten you completely.

Step 2: Get to Your Side

Turn to your side facing them. This is crucial - you cannot escape flat on your back.

Step 3: Shrimp Your Hips

Shrimp (hip escape) to create space between your bodies. Your frames push while your hips move away.

Step 4: Insert Your Knee

Bring your near knee into the space you created. This knee shield prevents them from moving to mount.

Step 5: Recover Guard

Continue shrimping and bring your other leg through to recover full guard or maintain knee shield.

Key Points

  • Frames must be strong
  • Get to your side immediately
  • Shrimp creates space
  • Knee shield protects against mount

Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Staying flat on back - impossible to escape
  • Mistake: Weak frames - they smash through
  • Mistake: Not shrimping enough - insufficient space
  • Mistake: Giving up underhook - makes escape harder

FAQ

Q: What if they're too heavy and I can't create space? A: Focus on timing - create space when they shift their weight or move.

Q: Should I go to half guard or full guard? A: Half guard is easier initially, but work toward recovering full guard.
