Overview

The leg drag is a technical guard pass that drags the opponent's leg across their body, creating an angle that leads to passing or back-taking opportunities. It's a staple of modern sport BJJ.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Establish Grip Control

Control their same-side leg/ankle and same-side collar or wrist. Your grips must be strong for this pass.

Step 2: Create the Angle

Step your same-side leg to the outside, creating an angle. Your body should be positioned outside their leg.

Step 3: Drag the Leg

Pull their leg across their body while stepping around. Their knee should cross their centerline.

Step 4: Control the Hip

Get your near arm across their hip or waist, preventing them from following you and recovering guard.

Step 5: Pass or Take the Back

Complete the pass to side control, or if they turn into you, take the back.

Key Points

  • Strong grip control required
  • Drag the leg across their centerline
  • Hip control prevents re-guard
  • Opens up back-taking opportunities

Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Weak grips - they can pull leg back
  • Mistake: Not creating enough angle
  • Mistake: Forgetting hip control - easy re-guard
  • Mistake: Moving too slow - gives time to recover
