Omoplata

Learn the omoplata from guard as a shoulder lock, sweep, and back-take threat built on angle and hip control.

Back to Closed Guard

Overview

The omoplata is an advanced shoulder lock using your legs to control and submit your opponent. It's also excellent for sweeps and transitions when the submission isn't available.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Set Up from Guard

From closed guard, create the same setup as armbar - isolate an arm and create angle. Their arm should be across your body.

Step 2: Swing Leg Over

Instead of going over their back (armbar), swing your leg over their shoulder, aiming to trap their arm with your leg.

Step 3: Control the Shoulder

Your leg should be positioned over their shoulder, controlling their trapped arm. Your other leg controls their torso.

Step 4: Pivot and Control

Pivot to face the same direction as them. Bring your chest to their back and establish control.

Step 5: Finish or Sweep

Extend their arm, lean forward, and rotate their shoulder. If they defend, use it for a sweep or back take.

Key Points

  • Similar setup to armbar
  • Leg control is crucial
  • Multiple finishing options
  • Excellent sweep even if submission fails

Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Not controlling the shoulder tightly
  • Mistake: Poor leg positioning
  • Mistake: Not being ready to sweep
  • Mistake: Forcing the submission - shoulder injuries
