Overview

The double leg takedown is a fundamental wrestling technique that attacks both of the opponent's legs simultaneously. It's one of the highest percentage takedowns in BJJ and MMA.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Establish Stance

Start in proper wrestling stance - knees bent, back straight, hands up. Maintain good posture and balance.

Step 2: Setup and Level Change

Create an opening through grip fighting or faking. Drop your level by bending your knees (not your back).

Step 3: Penetration Step

Step deep between their legs with your lead foot. Your head should go to the outside of their body.

Step 4: Lock Around Legs

Wrap both arms around both their legs, locking your hands together behind their knees. Your shoulder drives into their hips.

Step 5: Drive and Finish

Drive forward and lift, taking them to the mat. Land in side control or start passing immediately.

Key Points

  • Level change before penetration
  • Head to the outside
  • Deep penetration step
  • Drive with your legs, not just arms

Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Telegraphing by reaching first
  • Mistake: Bending at waist instead of knees
  • Mistake: Shallow penetration - easy to sprawl
  • Mistake: Head in the middle - risk of guillotine

FAQ

Q: How do I avoid the guillotine? A: Keep your head to the outside and don't reach your head forward prematurely.

Q: What if they sprawl? A: Switch to single leg, or work to get your hips back under you and continue driving.
