Overview

Osoto Gari is a powerful judo throw that reaps the opponent's leg while controlling their upper body. It's one of the most effective gi takedowns in BJJ.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Establish Gi Grips

Get high collar grip with one hand and sleeve/lapel grip with the other. Your grips should be dominant and controlling.

Step 2: Break Their Posture

Pull them forward and slightly off-balance to the reaping side. They should be loaded onto the leg you'll attack.

Step 3: Step Close

Step close to them, almost foot-to-foot. You need to be very close for this throw to work.

Step 4: Reap the Leg

Swing your leg back and through their leg, like a pendulum. Your leg makes contact behind their knee/thigh.

Step 5: Drive Through

Pull with your collar grip and drive them backwards over your reaping leg. Follow through to the mat.

Key Points

  • Strong collar grip is critical

  • Commit to the throw fully

Common Mistakes

  • Mistake: Weak grips - they can counter
  • Mistake: Not breaking balance first
  • Mistake: Standing too far away
  • Mistake: Half-hearted reap - easy to counter
